If your stool is rectangular, do the long sides first. Do the short nails or tacks, starting at the middle, making sure your material stays straight and tight. But don't put the tacks all the way to the corners. Then do the short ends the same way. The corners are pulled tight and tucked, kinda like making a bed. Good luck; it'll look great!

When I put a new cover on my window-seat type cedar chest with a 6" foam cushion, i used upholstery tacks all the way to the corner on each side, leaving out the last one on each side. Then take the fabric on the corner and pull it out to a point. Pull it underneath and even out the corner folds until you like them(you can tuck them under, or tuck the cornere under and the flap on top, either way looks good). Staple or tack down the point underneath, then put the last tack in on each side. I makes a little pleat at each corner that looks very finished.

tack down all the edges till u get to the corners and leave a point at the corners and that should be the last part to tack and pull tight[ if the lid has a cushion kneel on it to get a tight cover]
also look at the bottom of your kitchen chairs to see how it is done that way you have something to go by .good luck....

Attach the material along a straight side & staple, using a heavy stapler, the material to the bottom of the stool.
At the corner, bring the end of each of the straight sides & mstaple.
You will be left with a single billow of material.
Flatten this billow & bring under & staple.
Use your hand to keep the wrinkles out.
If you feel like you need more support, purchase upholstery tacks & apply them along the egde after you finish with the staples.

Here is a site showing in detail how to upholster a chair seat. If you scroll down near the bottom, it tells you how to put the seat cover on. That would be pretty much like putting a cover on a stool lid, it seems.

Just use tiny folds and either tack, staple, or glue them down as you go.

with cloth?? if so, its kind of hard to explain... but you can use a heavy duty stapler and kind of fold the edges over so that it doesn't pucker. sorry wish i could explain better.
