Norton Anti-Virus came with my computer, and I guess it has been OK. Last week I got a pop-up message that "one item" was affecting my (security) status - meaning a full scan or "sweep." I stopped what I was doing and the scan got to a certain number of items checked, when the computer crashed. About two days later I got the same message, and I stopped everything and let it scan - and when it got close to the same number of items, the computer crashed again. I am beginning to think that there is a virus, or adware or something which has a trip-wire out, so that a scan (by anyone) will end in a crash before the malware is discovered. Should I tell Norton? If so, how do I do it?

Try tapping F8 at the boot screen and select 'Safe Mode'. Run Norton in safe mode (which runs only the bare minimum) to see if that gets rid of the problem.

Are you running two firewalls? I have WinXP and I use its firewall. I disabled Norton's. Two firewalls will fight each other.

Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel
click to open Windows Firewall
if it is on, leave it on

Right-click on the Norton icon to open
click Options
System is the first on the list
where is says "How to respond" be sure "auto repair" is checked.

for Norton help, when you open Norton, at the top right corner, there is a button for Norton help.

What is happening is Norton Anti-Virus has run its course and they want you to pay for the new one. Got the extra couple of hundred dollars go ahead. My computer company told me to go to the control panel and remove the Norton completely, and then put in Avast4 Home edition, its free and they give you upgrades. Then put Zone alarm in, there is also one more they suggested. Sygate personal Personal Fire wall.
