This is a very perosnal choice -- so you may or may not agree.

Of the places you listed, I would pick San Francisco.

All the places are quite expensive -- so you face that of any of the spots you are asking about.

San Francisco is the most diverse area -- with great history, great art, great music, wonderful restaraunts, culture, geographic beauty and archetechture.

There is a very mild climate -- and it is a fairly small city that is not terribly hard to get around in -- and traffic is less of a problem than in LA or even San Diego.

The down side of SF is that the weather can be overcast quite often, but for me, that is outweighed by the great attributes of this phenomonal city.

Also, Berkley is right down the road -- but you don't have to live there -- but you can enjoy it. The same goes for Sausalito, Marin County and the Wine Country to the north. Half Moon Bay on down to Santa Cruz and Monterey and even Big Sur are easy drives for nice days trips as well.

The other places are just as expensive, have more people and traffic, are less attractive culturally and have downright dangerous areas that you might as well avoid entirely.

I love San Francisco.

I think you will too.

Good question.

San Francisco, by far the easiest to get around, but the most expensive to live in out of the four choices you mentioned.

Have you considered medium size towns like Ventura? On the beach, lower rents and home prices, friendly people, lots of culture, shopping and things to do. Not far from either Los Angeles or San Francisco if you have to go to either place.

Runnerup choices: San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay.

Have been to all those places many many times but after living in the country then going back (was born and raised in L.A.) all4 of those pretty much suck. WAY too many people, high crime (we won't even get into Berkely . The traffic is horrendous and you almost have to sell your organs to make it there. Finally got sick of it and moved to the midwest where I am making as much as out there but living very comfy now...if you insist on moving to one of those places, I'd suggest looking @ the outlying areas....@ least 1/2 to an hour outside of the main cities, @ least you MIGHT save your sanity. Good luck!
