No. By definition a "sound" must be created and received. If no one hears it, then it does not make a sound. However if a bird or a squirrel heard it, then it does make a sound!

so many people have asked this Q its boring. of course it makes a sound whether you hear it or not cos an object as large as a tree falling to the ground will always make a sound. OK, stop asking

Well sound is vibration that an ear picks up. So if a tree falls it still creates the vibration, but if there are no ears it is not receive as a sound. So I guess it depends on whether you define sound as the vibration or the received information in the ear.

Yes, if you could pick it up on a tape recorder, but I suppose it depends on your definition of sound. What I really want to know, though, is if a man were to speak in the woods and his wife is not there to hear him, is he still wrong?

Do we REALLY have to get this question EVERY day? - and does it matter anyway?
I've never not been in the woods when a tree hasn't fallen and the noise isn't deafening

Sound is formed when there is a disturbance in the surrounding medium (in this case air). For a sound to be recognised, there had to be a reciever that can pick it up (your ear). Just like a signal, just because it hasen't been picked up, doesen't mean that it does not exist.

Why do you keep asking the same question? I have seen this question many times. What is so special about it? The anwser is obvious. Are you conducting some sort of survey?
