After a decade (or a long time), your airbags tend to "expire" or would not work anymore...It's normal, but you should try to get a new car with new airbags for your safety.

I have only seen an airbag deploy accidentally one time, and that was the mechanic's fault, no fault of the system. Recall 02S44 on the 97 Escort is still in effect. The recall will install a cover over the air bag diagnostic monitor to keep condensation from the A/C tubing from dripping onto the module and dielectric grease on the air bag diagnostic monitor connector. Take it to the dealer and have this recall performed, it is free. If your mechanic cannot find the problem, you need to find another more knowledgeable mechanic. The lamp is blinking, and a diagnostic code will be stored to help diagnose it. Take the vehicle to the dealer and they will know what to do.

Step #1 -- get a new mechanic.
Step#2 -- see ford service dept and have SRS fault codes analized. Airbag system defaults to 'off' when computer senses problem. This could be module failing, sensor bad, corroded wire, loose connection, etc, etc. Due to the age of your vehicle the blinking lamp is probably flashing a sequence code, i.e; 1 -- 2 --3 -- pause -- 1,2; etc. This is what Ford used to use as diagnostic fault coding before the more advanced OBD (on board diagnostic) systems used today. If you are worried about premature deployment, (doubtful), pull the ABS fuse before driving to service.

Find a better mechanic. It flashes when the airbag circuit is not working. Yes, moisture has been known to do that to Ford trucks.

there is, what they call a clock spring in the steering column, it sets under the steering wheel and connects to the air bag on the steering wheel. it is a flat wire that is coiled up like a spring that you would find in a old clock, that's where the name came from, it is designed to wind and unwind as you turn the steering wheel back and forth. eventually parts wear out after continuous use, the wire becomes brittle and will break, causing a poor connection and when the system connection are broke, it will cause the light to flash

If you do decide to get it fixed take it to a Ford dealer. If the part is put in wrong, your airbag will go off and it will cost a small fortune to get it fixed - approximately $1,000.

You need a better trained mechanic. Find a QUALIFIED mechanic (not necessarily at the dealer, but that is an option) to scan your system and make the needed repairs!
