Repuglicans are Bigots, but they would like the black vote this year as they know they are in real trouble. So George went to make amends. Nobody shot him so I guess he must have done ok. I don't think they will get much of the black vote though as there is to much water under the bridge.

It took so long because he thought he could get elected without the "black vote" (and he did, twice). The politics of liberal democracies like the United States is a study in social- and cause- and leadership-morphing. The president is now so unpopular (due to the continuing debacle in Iraq, of course), that the Republican Party is desperate to change its image on many fronts. If the Republican Party does not substantially change its image and distance itself from the current Republican president, the legislative and executive power will likely swing to the Democratic Party in the next 30 months.
