Singapore has done astonishingly well compared to its neighbours, especially considering it was an impoverished swamp just 50 years ago. It's a shiny futuristic country with a higher standard of living than most western democracies, including the US. I don't know that the Singaporean government is exactly authoritarian, but it's also not exactly a democracy as it claims - whatever it is, it's done a good job so far.
And as far as the chewing gum thing, yes it's a fairly harsh law but it's a novelty law as well - excepting the Singaporean position on pornography its criminal law is very similar to the standard found in most western democracies. It's basically just like a cleaner version of Manhattan.
I assume the Sim City reference is meant to suggest that the Singaporean government is lacking in compassion or empathy and governs like its a game. I don't know enough to comment really - but if that is the case, it might even be a good thing if the intention is to improve society. In much the same way doctors can't effectively treat their family members.

The mayor of New York banned smoking in bars and pubs. That so many people allow a trumped up self righteous millionaire to control their lives and spread his misery is beyond me. Forget about Singapore. Its 2 far away.
