First you have to find out if it is the gauge or not. Might be power to it, or the the switch in the fuel tank might be bad. Best to let someone that knows how fix it :)

You may have a tailight out or a tailight fuse out. In many pre-computer everything cars, the tailight circuit is intentionally wired to the instrumentation cluster. Hence, if you are driving at night and an instrument, such as a fuel guage dies, it may be indicative of a tailight out. Otherwise how would you know a tailight is out? This is a clever way to avoid having complex circuitry to tell you that you actually have a tailight out, something not available in 1979.
Check all your fuses and lights first before messing around with the fuel sender. Also, check to see that you have gas. Maybe your fuel guage is working, but you have little to no gas left, so the guage looks like it is out.

You have usually a few good answers to your problem on is you may have a bad ground on your sending unit at the gas tank........number 2 your float in your gas tank may be stuck. in this case to fix it make you have at least a half a tank of gas...Take a good size hammer and wrap it good with a rag then get underneath it and with the flat side of the hammer hit it hard this may free the float...check your fuse first before this other stuff..your float could be water logged..with gas no hope you will need to pull the tank Giant Hassel good luck Mr Big

At that age & type, I'd point to either the float transducer or a failed gauge.
Either way, it's not a job for an inexperienced person to try.

could be the sending unit, bad float in the tank, or your gauge could have died.
