Eric Weiss purchased 4 tires by mail order. He paid $62.30 plus $6.20 shipping and handling per tire. There was no sales tax on this purchase. When he recieved the tires, Eric has to pay $8.00 per tire for mounting and balancing. At a local tire store, his total cost for the 4 tires with mounting and balancing would have been $425 plus 8% sales tax. How much did Eric save by purchasing the tires through the mail?

Cost of 4 tires by mail =4*62.30=249.2
Shipping and handling =4*6.20=24.8
Total cost = 274

for mounting and balancing =4*8=32

Final cost 274+32= 306

cost of tires at store = 425 + 34 = 459
where as 34 is (8%of 425)

money saved = 459 - 306

$153

First, we have to figure out how much Eric spent on buying the tires by mail order.

Each tire costs $62.30 plus $6.20 shipping and handling.

$62.30+$6.20=$68.50

$68.50 is the price of one tire. To find the price of 4 tires, we must multiply this amount by 4.

$68.50*4=$274.00

Now we need to find out how much it cost Eric to get all 4 tires mounted and balanced. It costs $8.00 per tire, so we multiply that by 4.

$8.00*4=$32.00

Now we add the cost of buying the tires via mail order and the cost of installation.

$274.00+$32.00=$306.00

Now let's look at the second scenario where the tires are bought and installed at a local store. The problem tells us the sub-total; we just need to concider the sales tax.

With 8% sales tax, we multiply 0.08 times the subtotal.

$425*0.08=$34.00

So sales tax adds $34.00 to the total price.

$425.00+$34.00=$459.00

The problem asks for how much Eric saves by buying tires through the mail. All we have to do now is subtract the amount he spends choosing the mail option from what he would spend going to the tire store.

$459.00-$306.00=$153.00

The answer is $153.

Trust me: This is the right answer:

Step 1: Calculate the local tire store price:
$425x1.08= $459
Step 2: Calculate the mail order price:
a. $62.3+$6.2=$68.5
b. $68.5x4=$274
Step 3: Add the mounting and balancing to the
mail order price.
a. $8x4=$32
b. $274+$32=$306
Step 4: Subtract the mail order price from the
local tire store price.
a. $459-$306=153

Answer: $153

6.2(4) + 62.30 = 24.8 + 62.3 = $87.10

87.10 + 8(4) = 87.10 + 32 = $119.10

425(1.08) = 459

459 - 119.10 = $339.90

ANS : $339.90

-------------------------

Unless you meant

(62.3 + 6.2)(4) = 68.5 * 4 = 274
274 + 8(4) = 274 + 32 = 306
459 - 306 = 153

ANS : $153
