Hi,
Porsche Boxsters have high reving engines that are bred for high performance and speed. Unfortunately the mid engine design does increase sound some what, but typically a Boxster engine is more of a whining noise rather than a loud exhaust sound.
When the soft top is up the engine sound is a little more pronounced, however, when the top is down it is more subtle engine sound than the US muscle cars.
If you are considering a brand new Boxster you will be surprised when the top is down of how quite the engine is, considering the mid engine design that you literally have the engine strapped to your back.
If you test drove a used Boxster be sure that there's not a problem with the engine or perhaps the owner had installed a performance exhaust system which tends to be louder.
I have a 1998 Boxster and can honestly say that it is not excessively loud, however, with the top down it is a very sweet sounding high performance Porsche engine sound.
Boxsters are very reliable and would not hesitate to recommend one.
Good luck with your search!
Regards,
Mike

How many Boxsters did you look at? How were they optioned? In standard trim, the Boxster (and Boxster S) is not a very loud car, engine/exhaust-wise. Being a convertible, you're definitely going to get more road noise, but that's a problem you'll have in any soft-top convertible.
There are a number of options for making Boxsters louder, and it's possible the car you drove had one or more of them installed -- sport exhaust (Porsche's sport exhaust still isn't very loud, but my third-party GHL is), modified air intake, etc.
If you accelerate hard and wind out to redline, of course the car is going to be loud. Boxsters redline at 7200rpm, which is pretty high. Driving more sedately, a Boxster should be no louder engine/exhaust-wise than any other sporty car.
As for people looking at you as you drive down the street, you're going to get that simply for driving a Porsche (depending on where you live, of course). If you don't want to stand out, go buy a Honda.

Drive another one. I don't understand this complaint. If anything the Boxster is the quietest Porsche ever made.
if you mean the sound it makes when you really get on it and rev it up, man that ain't noise that's music, and if you don't like the music, don't buy the car. Get a Lexus or Mercedes two-seater and be happy in your calm silence then. Porsches are generally meant for the enthusiast who is willing to sacrifice a bit of comfort for the electric feel of a car that's ready to run with the wolves.

It's not done on purpose, it's part of the engineering, getting that sweet sound. If you were a true Porsche/sports car enthusiast, it wouldn't be annoying; you just have to learn how to drive a Porsche.
Over ten years, (if this Porsche is brand new), the sound should get even better once the mileage starts increasing and the engine "breaks in" and performs even better.

Really i mean a porsche is a porsche it is built on the idea or true powerful loud engine, to prove that the porsche 911 is actually rated the loudest car by topgear and this is compared to ferrari, and all the other cars.

Porsches are just loud, thats what makes them so awesome. I have a 928 from 1982, and it is even louder than the new ones because it has a bigger engine. But people dont usually look at you because your car is loud, they look because they like what they see. You will never find a better sports car though, but if you are looking for something for comfort and quiet and luxury, then you probably want to look at some other car manufactuers "sports cars".

Its easy to swap out the mufflers - plenty of companies out there can do it for you - and weight saving on the originals as well.
