There is a tree, that actually grows, called a "money tree." Obviously it doesn't grow cash,, but why do they call it that?

I don't know any actual living tree called a money tree, but there is a tree commonly called a silver dollar tree. That's Eucalyptus cinerea, and it's called silver dollar tree because the leaves are round and silvery-green, so they somewhat resemble coins. They are used in flower arrangements sometimes.

I remember my parents saying, "money doesn't grow on trees". But we had a coin plant. It had paper thin circles on it the size of coins.

Money Tree is botanically known as "Pachira Aquatica" or other common names are Guiana Chestnut, Malabar Chestnut, Saba Nut. If you think it is born as pot plant, well..not really. It is actually a spreading tree that grows to 60 feet tall in the wide. It has greenish bark and shiny, dark green compound, 8-10 inches leaves. Pachira is native to Central American and Northern South American. In the wild, it is a wetland tree that grows in freshwater swaps associated with tropical estuaries. It often grows alongside rivers, were its branches arch out over the water.

Well its because people believe if you have this tree money will magically (by luck) come into your household. Some lucky person pry won something big and happen to own this plant.
