The first report I heard was that they had infiltrated the group with and informant. Is the truth out there? Certain liberties are gaurenteed us by the constitution; freedom and the right to free speech. The judge saw this as taking away yet another gaurenteed liberty. If a judge sees legitimacy in any situation a proper warrant can be issued.

Well, one thing to remember is that Britain and the US have different laws. So, what's legal in Britain might be illegal in the US.
But cat38skip is correct. The ruling went through the text of the law (50 USC 1801 and 18 USC 2511) as passed by Congress, and determined the Bush's program didn't even make an attempt to comply with the law.

We are supposed to be a nation of laws. Living by the rule of law.
When leaders such as the cheney/bush regime decide to ignore the law and break it even when there is a provision in the law to allow secret wiretaps with the approval (even after-the-fact) by a special court set up just for that purpose, we as the citizens have a problem. Which law might they decide to circumvent next?
The Federal Judge was stating the constitution and law as congress passed it and given that there are provisions in that law for wiretaps if approved by the special secret court, the republican regime broke the law.
