I don't even remember the plot! I know it was a picture book. I believe it was a portly man who was eaten up. There is a clear image in my mind of the couch - at an angle - with just eyeglasses and possibly a cravat or tie on the cushions - which was all that was left of him.
I would have read it in the late 70's/early 80's, but my husband remembers the same thing, which could put it back in the 60's, or earlier still.
Nothing like a sinister children's book to remember after all these years...the drawings perhaps had lurid overtones, but I am not sure.
Thanks to anyone who might know!

It wasn't the Tomato Collection - though I really appreciate that link! - and so far I don't think it's The Curious Soda. I am having trouble finding an illustration other than the cover, and from the description it doesn't sound like the couch actually ingests the person. It just...does other things.

Was it by any chance Edward Gorey's "The Curious Sofa: A Pornographic Work by Ogdred Weary"? Not exactly a children's book, but nobody did lurid in subtle line drawings like Gorey.

Was it The Tomato Collection by Kevin Kammeraad? It's a collection of poetry. Take a look at the cover and reviews on Amazon to see if it is the one.

Yeah, sounds like The Curious Sofa... not a children's book, but about the size and shape of one. I looked, and the description you gave looked similar to the last page.
