I had a few hamsters before I got my dog. They're great pets, but you have to socialize them early. Make sure the hamster you choose has a healthy, shiny coat, and buy them at night because they are nocturnal (day sleepers) and you will be able to see their personalities when they are more energetic. Get the cage ready before you buy the hamster because they will chew through the box the pet store will give you. They are very easy to take care of, but you do need to clean their cage pretty often (once a week at least). They are also very cheap! But the most important thing, like I've said before, make sure you handle them A LOT when they are still young. The more you handle them, the less likely they will bite and it'll be more pleasant to hold a calm hamster than a nervous one (they'll try anything to get away from you!). They're fun pets - but don't buy a metal wheel. Buy a plastic one or else it will keep you up at night. Well, I hope you take all of my advice and decide to get one - they're great little furry things!

Can you take care of it every day - no skipping? Food and water have to be available all the time. The cage needs to be cleaned every few days, or it will stink, Wanta do that? It will need an exercise wheel in the cage, it will squeak - will it keep you awake? Hamsters are basically nocturnal (up at night) - unless you stay up late - not too much of a pet and a lot of work. Think about it. Go ahead if you can commit to this cute little animal. Make no mistake - it IS a commitment.

Yes, if that's what you really want, you should get a hamster. Remember though, they only have a 2-3 year life span. Not all of them bite, I had one, he didn't bite. They are fun to watch in your living room or bedroom when you let them run around in one of those hamster balls. Happy Birthday!!!!

If you are going to get one than you should use YOUR money , and remember that it is yours! They are a little messy...the cages are a little spendy....(and stinky)...and they depend on you to care for them (you gotta feed them and give them fresh water----EVERYDAY!!!) Don't buy one that bites you- they only bite if they are scared or abused....if you are gentle and kind and love it without "smothering"it than it will love you back. Reading a book about hamsters is a good start - before you buy one - check one out at your library! Hamsters are very funny and fun to watch! They are also living creatures and deserve respect and love and proper care....are you ready / willing /able ???

You can get a hamster for about $6, but the cage, food, bedding, water bottle, exercise ball, etc will cost about $50. Look on petfinder.com and you'll be able to find one for less that might include all the supplies. I have one for my daughter, and unfortunately, she lost interest in it after only a few days. Now, apparently, it is my pet. Too bad.
