When the odometer in Steve's car reads 16,741.3, he fills his gas tank. The next time he fills his tank it takes 10.5 gallons, and his odometer reads 16,935.4. Determine the number of miles per gallon that his car gets.

I'm at a loss on this problem. can someone explain to me how to solve it? Thanks.

subtract the ending mileage from the beginning mileage and divide that number by the number of gallons consumed.

(16935.4 - 16741.3) / 10.5

(what's he driving - a HUMMER?)

16,935.4
-16,741.3
________
194.1

18.485
______
10.5/ 194.1
Steve's Car Gets 18.485 Miles Per Gallon, It's Not All That Great of Gas Mileage!!
You Take the 2 Figure of Mileage at Fill Up and Subtract the Smaller Number from the Larger Number and then Divide the Number of Gallons into the Miles that were drove between Fill Ups.

The miles per gallon is done by first finding the difference in the amount of miles.
You subtract the later amount of miles from the first.
In word problems when you see the word "per" that means you will do division.
Miles per gallon means how many miles you traveled on a given amont of gas.
This means you divide the total distance you traveled by the total amount of gallons.
Go do it your self now and for the rest or your life with all the cars you will own.

subtract the odometer readings. In your case 16935.4 - 18741.3 this gives 194.3 Then divide by 10.5 giving about 18.5. This is not very good, but you would get a better sampling over more than one gas fill up.

Well you want MILES/GALLON so you much determin those values u already have GALLONS so u must workout miles which is 16,935.4-16,741.3= 194.1

So, 194.1/10.5 = 18.485 miles/gallon

This is pretty easy. i'm pretty sure about my answer.

Okay:

Step 1: Subtract 16,935.4 by 16,741.3= 194.1
Step 2: Divide 194.1 by 10.5= 18.485714

16,935.4 - 16,741.3 = 194.1 miles travelled.

194.1/10.5 = 18.49 miles per gallon (rounded to two decimal places).
