in addition to the other answers, try checking your computer for spyware/adware, sometimes spyware runs in the background causing this problem also, preventing defrag and other issues. Programs like spybot search & destroy and adaware se are awesome tools. Also try Windows Defender beta version. This can be downloaded from Microsofts website. The other 2 can be downloaded from www.download.com

Sounds like the hard drive is full so run disk cleanup and delete files or programs you no longer use to make space on your drive.

Try to do "Disk Cleanup" first...hopefully that will free up some space for you to defragment..

You can only defrag if you have all running programs stopped.

Run the defragmenter, in safe mode. When starting your computer, tap the F-8 key, when you see the menu, use the arrow key, to get into safe mode, it's usually the third one down.Then press enter on your keyboard..
