I'm trying to come up with a nice birthday surprise for my boyfriend. I know that he loves watching F1 races. However, since there won't be any F1 events in the US anytime soon, I'm thinking of taking him to a NASCAR race. Has anyone been to those NASCAR races? You think he'll enjoy them?

Honestly I don't know anything about car racing... I apologize if my question sounded stupid!

Thank you all sooooooo much! I really appreciate all the answers. They're all great! I might end up taking him to a race AND getting him a 1/48 scale show car. Hahaha... Thank you guys!

I am a Formula 1 fan myself. I have seen Nascar before and it is nothing compared to F1. Nascar's races are kind of boring because there are no adventure in the track. Nascar's tracks are more oval and does not have much excitement as Formula 1. The cars are even slower and much too big.
I don't know what you boyfriend is like but if I were you, I would buy him a F1 show car (one of these in the boxes that you can put on a bookshelf) of his favorite team (that's to say if he doesn't have too many of them yet).

If he's an F1 fan, he might not get the same enjoyment out of a NASCAR race. I'd fly the idea past him first to see if he'd even be interested, or if he's one that turns up his nose at NASCAR. Some folks who follow F1 can't stand NASCAR, and vice versa.

But I think it's great that you'd want to do this for him, especially if you're not a racing fan yourself!

(Me, I'm a NASCAR fan and am going to the fall race at TMS again this year. But I don't know that I'd be interested in going to an F1 race.)

If your boyfriend likes watching F1 races, there is a very good chance that he won't like NASCAR.
I won't make any friends with the NASCAR folks by saying this, but it's true. There is little or no finesse in NASCAR; really it's a crude form of racing with cars that look much like taxi's endlessly lapping a variety of oval-shaped tracks (OK, there are two races on road courses, but they are over) and frequently crashing.
Depending on where you live in the U.S. a better option might be a Sportscar race, something that has a lot more in common with F1 when it comes to technology.
The American Le Mans Series (ALMS) has only four races left on the schedule, including one this weekend. However, the series premier event, the Petit Le Mans, a 12-hour or 1000-mile race will be held at Road Atlanta in Brazleton, GA., Sept 27-30.
As somebody else suggested, as an alternative, you might consider getting him a 1/48 scale model of his favourite F1 car.
You'll find information on the ALMS calendar at this site:

Yes they are. I went to a race at Pocono Raceway this past June. It was the first one I've ever been to and I had a lot of fun. If he likes racing, I think he'll like NASCAR. Has he ever watched a NASCAR race on TV before? NASCAR and F1 are pretty different, but he'll probably enjoy a NASCAR race. Well, here's the schedule if you decide to go to one: http://www.nascar.com/races/cup/2006/data/schedule.html

Oh, if you do go TAKE EAR PLUGS WITH YOU!! The car's engines are VERY LOUD!! And for the people who said it's boring, where the heck did you go?! Pocono was awesome! Talladega is coming up in October, you might want to go to that race. I've never been to a race there, but I've seen it on TV..............AWESOME!! :)

I loveeeeeee going to a race. The weekend is really fun/love going around spending money on 24 this and 24 that.

It is a long day (actual race day) but soooo worth it. BRING SUNSCREEN no matter WHAT!!!

I know that I am in the Minority, but I wouldn't go to a NASCAR race, if you paid me. Of all spectator events - NASCAR is the most ridicules.

I've only been to one Nascar race. It was awsome! The loudness and the speed of the cars was cool... and the ceremonies and stuff are good also. I'm sure he'll appreciate it if you took him.

Absolutely. The Nascar races are great. I have only ever been to two, but I watch them every week. They are very exciting, but you need to get a favorite driver first. I suggest Jeff Gordon-#24. :)

I love going to races. Its really the highlight of the year for me. If you could go to one race take him to Las Vegas Motorspeedway next March. Attend the races but also enjoy Vegas nightlife! If he doesnt like the race at least you can leave and go play on the strip!! But the race next year will be awesome since they are changing the banking. Its going to BE AWESOME!!
