A first-generation Miata is a VERY good buy.. it handles very well and has the added chassis stiffening needed in cars that go topless.
Volkswagen Rabbits are, dead serious, INCREDIBLY fun cars to drive! Find a Rabbit GTI and your friends will make fun of you but you'll have fun every time you get behind the wheel.. then when you're ready to scare your friends into silence, you can swap in a 2.0 liter 16V engine out of a later-model Golf [it's a VERY easy swap, as engine swaps go] and you'll put most Japanese "tuner cars" to shame.
To address the "sportscar looks" issue, no cheap car with sportscar looks is worth a damn :P [just my opinion though]... sportscars shouldnt be cheap.

A BMW 3 series from the mid 90s - sports car plus luxury.
A bit pricey to maintain, but you can find them for less than $10K. You wouldn't be typecast as a boy racer with a BMW vs. a Honda or a Neon.

Honda is tough to beat for quality and longevity. BUT since Suzuki has bought out Hyundai, the "deals" are tough to beat. 10 years of warranty, "bumper to bumper". They run their dealerships and repair shops with a drill Sergeant! No nonsense! My wife had her rear window replaced, no questions asked when it popped out on a 100+ degree day. They never contacted the insurance company and we did not have to pay any deductible. They do push you get and record oil changes and the like for a complete car history. Something you should do anyway. Good luck.

I drive a red scion xB - 34 mpg, and under 16K new - very good deal. It has just enough pep to keep up with the crazies at 85 on the interstate. The resell value is incredible - I generally see them going for more than was paid. The downside - there is a waitlist to get one unless you take whatever is on the lot.
