In more simpler terms, there are programs called FTP Programs like WS_FTP LE that you can download free for 30 days from download.com or Cute FTP. Any FTP program does the same thing though: they transfer files from your computer to the Internet. So if you have a website, let's say it's www.puppies.com, then you would take files from your computer such as 'puppy1.html' and 'puppy2.html' and upload it through an FTP program onto www.puppies.com, so now you have a URL like: www.puppies.com/puppy1.html which will show up as the page you made on the computer.
