There's a saying:

"Those who don't know History are doomed to repeat it."

It basically means that if you don't learn from the mistakes that our ancestors have made in the past, we'll eventually end up making the same mistakes.

If we learn from the past, however, we can prevent such tragedies from happening again.

We learn history because we need to know about the past civilizations, how it impacts our lives now, how it seems history has repeated itself. We learn it for knowledge of who we are, where we come from. We also learn history because we need to know how our civilization came to be now.

How we learn history depends on where we are from. Some countries try to whitewash there history to make everything seem like there country was great. They also cover certain history up so some people don't know about there history. But you should always try to figure out both sides of the story don't believe it right off the back but take it into consideration and research it for yourself make your own analysis.

You mean U.S. history? We need to learn history in order to be knowledgeable of the past which is very important. To catch up what's the difference between the past and present. THE PAST IS OUR MIRROR FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW. We need to know who were the leaders in our country, the legend of the states and its people. You learn by buying a history book or you can attend some college history classes. Most important: in order to learn, you need to understand, not just read, the stories and happenings.

Why do we learn history?
So we can see our past mistakes and triumphs and learn from them.

How do we learn it?
I'm not convinced we have learned it. Modern society has accepted that if it doesn't effect us in the now, that it doesn't matter. This is, of course, another mistake. As long as we deny history and its lessons, we shall repeat those errors again and again.
