Why are my home grown tomatoes developing deep cracks where the stem meets the fruit? I suspect not enough irrigation.

usually caused when they lack water for a few days then too much is put in to try and compensate,, the large increase in water will crack the tomato!!

i think that there are cracks because the soil needs to be more dense. try dropping a bit of water on top of the cracked parts. make sure you dont add too much however.

Well, when they become ripe it is normal as they ripen further, but if it happens before they are ripe I don't know. Dried out maybe. Try a little more water and some miracle grow.

So it was dry and then you got rain? That's what it is from.
