"How can I get the hell off this planet?
I feel so smothered by its atmosphere! I want to leave so badly."

I think what we have here is an underlying resentment toward the atmosphere. I think dealing with that resentment and the root causes of that resentment are where we need to steer this discussion since I really don't think the planet is the problem.

Answer these questions so I can further assess your feelings...
1) Has 'atmosphere' ever hit you?
2) Is 'atmosphere' verbally abusive toward you?
3) Has your father and/or mother met 'atmosphere' and if so what were there thoughts?
4) As a child how was your relationship with 'atmosphere'?

I think once you honestly answer these questions you'll start seeing a pattern. If you need any more help you can get some more insight from me at 7pm on channel 7...

Thank you,

Dr. Phil

Were you planning on returning?

If you want to just go up, become a fighter pilot or a PhD in some field of science or medicine and apply to NASA.

If you want to stay up, tell Congress to up NASA's budget.

In the meantime, read Ben Bova's Welcome to Moonbase and Robert Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Red Planet, Farmer in the Sky, The Rolling Stones, and maybe Tunnel in the Sky. The first four are based on engineering we have now. Tunnel in the Sky isn't, but it's a cool read, still.

I sympathise, There are so many stupid people, so many petty bureaucrats, too much monkey business for me to be involved in.

When it starts to get me down, what I do is go to the top of a multi-storey car park and look down on the people and cars on the streets below and they look so small they look like ants and this helps me to rise above all the pettiness and to stand outside it and diminish its stifling effects on me,

It's my private space up there and going there clears my brain of whatever is clogging it up at the time, it gives me an overview and restores my sense of proportion again, I didn't physically get off the planet, but I did get higher up and feel "bigger and better" for it ,,,

I think for anyone creative or sensitive, it is normal to feel alienated by the rat race, and I think it's great that you can talk about it,

For $200,000 you can book a flight on Virgin Galactic. No plans are concrete yet. $20,000 for a deposit.
They claim this will happen in a few year time table.

"We are now starting to take reservations and deposit commitments for the first year of operations. The ticket price has been set at US$200,000 and the minimum, fully refundable deposit to secure your spaceship seat is US$20,000."
