Not a big deal in Mexico among Mexicans. They know it commemorates the Battle of Puebla, but American visitors will use any excuse for a party. Mexican bars are happy to oblige.Tequila marketeers and beer companies got on the Cinco band wagon many years ago and promoted the the "holiday" to US bars and supermarkets. Big money in point-of-sale materials too, printing companies love it.

From what I understand, this holiday is not that big of a deal in Mexico. Cinco de Mayo celebrates a battle that was won against the French. In the U.S. we use it as an excuse to get wasted.
The 16th of September is a BIG holiday in Mexico. It's their independence day.

It is really a minor commemoration in Mexican history: the date when a rag-tag band of peasants mustered enough strength to defeat the French army at the Battle of Puebla.
Today it is largely used as an excuse to go on a drinking binge by Latinos and Anglos alike.

It is a National holiday for celebrating your roots,
defending your customs and the richness of your culture. In cities with a lot of Hispanic people, big fiestas are held with food, music, dancing, art, handicrafts, and this is an excellent way to reaffirm and share what's best in your culture.
So dress up and celebrate and dance to the music
and have a lot of food to celebrate
And give thanks to Almighty God b4 you eat

I celebrate it, but mostly in my mind. It's funny to think of who lost to who in Puebla so many years ago...
