I started at 14, with my brother, didn't smoke heavily until I married, my husband smoked and everyone at the base did. We'd play games and cards, have a drinks and smoke. Military cigarettes were very cheap. We both quit in our 30s when 2 uncles and 1aunt died with lung cancer and my husband got bronchial pneumonia over and over.
We quit cold turkey and alternately snarled and hugged our way through it. I still miss having a cigarette after dinner , but wouldn't start again for any thing1

Good questions. I am a former smoker and my dad, sister, and brother still smoke. I first tried smoking with a group of my friends when I was 13. I think we did it to be older, and because someone stole some smokes from their parents. That Marlboro made me a little light headed and it seemed kinda cool. We all thought we were real cool teenagers. I smoked casually when offered a cigarette for a few years. Then in high school I started drinking and smoking became part of the weekend drinking. I could stop smoking the first day of football and start back up the day after the season. This was usually because we started drinking again. I haven't smoked for about 5 years. I don't like the smell and the cost is high. My wife smoked in her teens too and we both are happy to keep that in our past.

I started smoking at the age of 14 because "everyone" else was doing it.I was a teenager in the 60's. I stopped smoking in 1992, at the age of 44 because I kept getting respiratory infections and my sons really hatted the smell of the smoke. I went to the Dr. and he prescribed the nicotine patch which was just being used. I haven't had a cigarette since, but must admit that I'd enjoy one every now and then. I do dislike the smell of smoke on others now, though

I started when I was twelve. My mother and I moved to center city of my home town from the burgs. I was the token white. Had to hang or die. Thru high school, smoked. Twenty years in the Army, smoked. Met a woman, (PhysEd teacher), Quit smoking with the help of hipnosis. That was twenty years ago. Then, a carton was only eleven bucks. Never had another since. Had x-ray and cat scan several months ago. Results were ; I was as strong as a horse, I looked like a horse or I smelled like a horse. I have to call the doctor back to get the right answer.

I started smoking when I was 18 and backpacking around Europe, not sure why...
I quit smoking when I was 27, I thought it was time. I realised what it was doing to my health and didn't like being a smoker anymore. I used Paul MacKenna's techniques. Basically rewireing your brain with your self talk. I decided I was no longer a smoker and as I was not a smoker craving a cigarette was silly thinking. It worked better than patches and other things I had unsuccessfully tried in the past

quit smoking just about a year ago, my longest ever yet.. started when i was 18. chain-smoked most of years in between. i wanted to stop even before but was with partners and friends who smoke so quitting was really hard when temptation is readily available. I've tried everything just to break the habit but lasted for a span of two months max then a relapse. so how? got rid of those who tempt me. fell-in-love with a guy who doesn't smoke and who doesn't like to see me smoke. mind setting, telling yourself in the beginning that you are not gonna smoke today so maybe tomorrow... then suddenly tomorrow's never come. also helped me was seeing what a smoker's lung and insides looks like (Oprah show). be frightened to what may become of you, and to those around you if you continue.

I was 16 and won a lighter as a prize from a radio program contest. I bought my first pack, it made me so dizzy, I realized I was not in control if I smoked and I felt it more important for me to be in control of what I do rather than to be popular socializing. My mother told me I could continue IF I could afford cigarettes. I could never afford cigarettes even till this day...so I never continued. Frankly I don't understand how people can waste so much money letting it go up into the air.
