touzours..I'd like to say that I'm really disappointed in your stupid question, I've always respected and admired you for believing in your country and your team, I know you don't like Italians and think that we're cheaters etc. etc... but to think that Italians are racists that's uncalled for..I could go on about this question but I'd rather not waste my time..All I can say is ...AMEN to Belen

I have no idea what you're talking about, but the reason France has no French players is beacuse the French IMMIGRANTS, that's what they're called, play better. And thanks to HENRY and Zidane France even had a chance in the past few World cups. So stop being ignorant and deal with it. So it's not that French players wont play for France, it's that France doesn't want French players. And Soccer isn't about race and culture and all that Sh*t you're talking about. It's about soccer. Who cares if they get an Arab to replace ZIDANE. They can get a chinese person, or a brazilian for all I care, as long as they can play.

well, I think that just as those comments are racist comments, and uncalled for, I don't think that making a whole um.. "question" about it is right either, and that the right way to approach this would just be to report it, after all, it's only the internet, no one is supposed to take it harshly.
also, just as I don't think that it is right to make the comments stated above, it's not right to comment how "all Italians are racists" like so many people are doing, what is this, let's substitute racism for ignorance and stereotyping day?

also, I would like to point out that a lot of the "so called italians" (not all, there is no need to start jumping and typing like a maniac all in CAPS angrily, and telling me I'm a hypocrite for sterotyping), you know, the ones who are uber proud of being an "Italiano", yet probably don't even know the titile of the italian anthem... are mostly American's with an Italian heritage, who only learned 2 months ago (because of the world cup) that Italy is "Italia", and if you put a "forza" right in front of it it will give you +5 credibility points.

As for the Zidane headbutt/Materazzi thing.. it's old, we shouldn't even get upset about it.. it happened, and even the players have moved on with their lives, so why can't we do that too?
why can't we accept that what Zidane did was wrong, and so was what Materazzi did?
We clearly need to stop seeing things black and white/ good and bad in the US, because if we continue like this we'll just start a war...oh wait... never mind, we already did.. : \ sorry sorry sorry.

I think this is actually a perfect example of how sometimes (often) no side is right in an argument.

EDIT: touzours - I'm not saying YOU said all Italians are racists. I was talking about all the other comments on this topic. Even so, the third comment, i think, after mine, mentions how "it's in the italian culture to be racist" - which I find to be just as insulting as it is for someone from Italy to say that someone who is muslim is a terrorist. Don't you think so too?
It's just a game, and the players leave everything that happens on the field behind them, and move on with their lives, so I think we should do that to.
Whether Materazzi really did call Zidane a son of a terrorist whore, it's between them, not us, and because of that incident people shouldn't stereotype all Italians as bigots, the same way I don't say all English men are hooligans, all Germans are Nazi's, all Dutchies are high, or all Americans are stupid.

Ur absolutely rite.France is muticultural country coz there are many Arab and African origins there. But all of them r French citizens. The people of French origin and the Arab-African French people live united and make up beautiful country-France.WHEN THE FRENCH HAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE FRENCH CIZTIZENS WITH ARAB OR AFRICAN ORIGIN,THEN WHY THE HELL ARE THE ITALIANS SOO CONCERNED????I must say, these Italians are racists.Lemme tell u ,In football it doent matter what ur origin is or who u r.It only matters how well u play.GET IT?So if these French citizens of Arab-African origin want to play in the national team , they play for France coz now they r French.
So no matter if ur black or white ,muslim or christian all that matters is that u should play well.
I'm not a French .But I've visited France many times and I love that country.

I know, I've read all these comments before and it really upset because all were very racist. What does colour of skin matter on the pitch? All that matters is skill!True football fans know that race is not an issue. It's so ignorant also to think that because Zidane is of arab descent that he is a terrorist. We're here to discuss football, not race!

I can't say for sure, but I suspect they are responding to the constant barrage of poor sportsmanship by the French. Italy and France are geographic neighbours and share many of the the same culture, qualities and genealogy. Racism doesn't really apply here. Actually it shouldn't be anywhere, unfortuantely it is.

hi belen. thanks for your very level headed views, it’s pretty right on the money. unfortunately, this is the world cup category and that's how team rivalries are played out here. We trade "insults” though ideally only in the spirit of fun. With this, I'm not saying it's alright for anyone to say whatever they please because there are limits for sure. And racist remarks are one of them. No one not even the most rabid of partisans should tolerate it here. We may belong to warring teams here but try viewing some of the threads and you'll see we almost always speak out as one against the racist idiots who plagued this board. My point is, there’s no room for racists anywhere, we have to speak out against them, and if it takes questions like these to highlight the ignorance of these people and expose their ugly prejudices then by all means, let’s have them.

No we don't need more proof..Awesomebill said that you're racist, but now see who are being racist here..I'm a French+Dutch who live in France and I'm glad I do live in France because the people of France accepted me in such a welcoming way though I have a dutch blood running in my body..They didn't even care about it and they treated me like I'm a real French..That's the way!! VIVE LES BLEUS!! (sorry Netherlands but I do live in France anyways, right??)

The French fans disagreed with the way Italy played, that is all.

But Italian fans keep calling Zidane a terrorist, make claims that Makelele, Gallas or Henry are not real French, don't you see a pattern forming here?

And as for punishment because what goes around comes around, they (italian fans) lost their favorite players to other clubs in other countries.

I repeat Italy got lucky, played extremely filthy tricks, faked playing the ball while tackling (the butcher fly's favorite trick).

The 5 thumbs-down is a testimonial that the italian fans are really p*** oed

You are just forgetting a little detail: a certain fellow named Jean-Marie LePen and all those who vote for him.

Of course and thank God, not all the French share his racist ideas. And of course and thank God, not all Italians are racist.

So simple. Geez, dude, relax!
