It is a very difficult sport and is vastly under-rated. Most people think it is all about being 'pretty' but that's not so. You have to have acrobatic abilities, flexibility, have a very strong kick and very strong arm strokes, you have to be able to do precision work with other swimmers and you have to be able to work as a team. And you have to do about 90% of the work under water, holding your breath (no SCUBA gear allowed!)
A few years ago, a group of male lifeguards decided to show just how 'sissy' the sport was and do a synchronized presentation during the interval at a swim meet. They worked very hard on the routine, and all things considered, they didn't do a bad job (although they weren't very graceful!) but they came out of the experience with a new respect for synchro.
It could be interesting to have a mixed synchro team, or a mixed pairs team, as some of the figures the swimmers are now swimming involve pushing one person high up into the air on a platform made of the other swimmer's (or swimmers' if it's a team event) body. Having a guy do some of the lifts while the gal did the aerobatics would make it more like pair figure skating.
In any case, it's a great sport. Not for sissies!
