They pass through waivers. When someone is put on waivers, another team can claim them. When they are claimed the team that put the person on waivers can withdraw them or workout out some sort of deal (similar to a trade) in order to let one of the teams that claimed him have him. It's just as confusing as this is to explain.

1. Shaun Chacon is on the Pirates, just so you know and its easy:
The Red Sox put Hinske on waivers, and the Pirates claim him. After the Pirates claim him, the Sox can do 1 of four things:

a. The Red Sox can work out a eal with the teams that claimed their player.

b. The Red Sox can dump the player onto a team of their choice and make that team pay his whole salary

c. The REd Sox can pull him back and not move him

d. If no one claims the player, the Red Sox can trade him to any team of choice.

This ain't the perfect answer, just in case you don't get any other answers.

The trade deadline doesn't mean trades can't be made altogether, it just means it's a deadline having to do with trading players.

I'm not sure why, but there's a significant benefit to making trades before the deadline. There's either a bonus for doing it beforehand, or a penalty for doing it after -- I'm not sure which it is.
