Credit reporting agencies can keep accurate negative items on a consumer's credit report for up to seven (7) years and can keep a bankruptcy on a file for up to ten (10) years.
If a credit reporting agency is reporting a negative item that is older than 7 years (10 years for bankruptcy), you can file a dispute directly with the credit reporting agency through its website (see links below) to get the item removed.

It's seven years from the date of activity so a late payment on July 1 2006 will be on record until July 1 2013 which is why keeping up on current debts are more important than worrying about past debts. Any negatives on your credit report from July 1 1999 or before will be coming off soon. It's ten years in the case of bankruptcy. If there are things on your credit report prior to the seven year history, get them taken off. Also if you find errors on your credit reports, challenge them!!!

7 years. In the meantime, you could protest the charge if there's any reason to, or add a note on your credit report explaining the information.

typically 7 years
BUT you can contest it by clicking "not mine" (using equifax as an example)
The charge will then have to be proven within 30 days or it comes off your record. Do it over and over every month or so and eventually someone will screw up and you will get it wiped off. Best part is, it's perfectly legal to use this process.
