Well, technically no one person does. As many of the previous people explained it is a group made up of many leaders from many countries. However, they have become very inefficient at handling any problems as there are too many differing view points represented in the UN. The majority of countries that belong to the UN are more of a dictator type gov. which runs differently than a democracy and holds individual rights at the bottom of their list.
The "oil for food" scandal is a prime example of how ineffective the organization is. It also shows that most of these countries can be bought off to look the other way. It also explained why certain people (Kofi Annan) and countries (France, Russia) were very opposed to our war in Iraq. But, that is another story.

Although, I believe that the UN has become a waste of time and a very large money pit for the US. I don't believe that we should get out of the UN. Belonging to the UN, we get an idea of what is going on politically around the world. I am a firm believer in the saying "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer". This is exactly what we are doing by belonging to this organization.

No one person controls the UN. It is instead controlled by many countries and factors. The UN is actually a very complicated organization and does much more than most people hear about, so that factors in as well.

The UN most people think of is really controlled by the Security Council which is made up of 10 elected countries and 5 permanent members. Those 5 are China, France, Russia, UK, and the US.

Who has the most influence and control over issues? Why who else but the good ol' USA.

well, i was privliaged enough to take a tour of the UN (very cool) this summer, and learned a good bit. no one person really "controls" the UN. (not even Bush...in fact, the UN has actually disagreed with him on many occasions and frowned at his *very* poor judgement.) it's basically the representatives who "control" by vote--the whole process for making decisions is very democratic, and there is plenty of opportunity for people to make objections/their own points on the matter, from what i understand.

not one specific country controls the UN, it's made up with a representation of many countries...The major decisions are made on the UN security council, which is represented by many major countries, including, U.S, China, Germany, France, Great Britain, etc

The United Nations was founded as a successor to the League of Nations which was considered by many to have been ineffective in its role as an international governing body; in the sense that it had been unable to prevent World War II. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations for more info on the United Nations.
