Broadband is DSL as is any high speed data line, DSL, Cable Modem or Satellite.

I think you are probably referring to DSL vs. Cable as those are the most common types of high speed connection. Both have strengths and weaknesses but it really depends on what you want to do.

In general, Cable has a faster connection but it is a shared connection meaning that when everyone in your area is on at the same time you will experience slower connection speeds.

DSL is a dedicated connection but it is generally slower, you can get a DSL just as fast as Cable but you will pay more, but DSL is a dedicated connection. No one uses your connection but you so your speed should always be constant. The last limiting factor for DSL is distance to the switch. The farther away you are, the slower your connection will be, there is a guaranteed bottom end but you should check how far from a switch you are before deciding on DSL.

Now that those are out of the way, it really depends on usage. What are you going to do with your connection?

If you are just interested in web, email, streaming video, etc., you should probably go with Cable. It is fast and easy.

If you are looking to set up a server for gaming or to host your own web site, you will need to go with DSL, of the two it is the only one that can give you a permanent IP address, needed for hosting a server.

Both have been lowering rates and you should be able to get one in your area for about $20 a month or less.

Hope this helps.

There are several types of internet connections:
- dialup (normal phoneline connection)
- ISDN (uses the phoneline aswell but is faster)
- broadband connection
- other

Broadband connection includes:
ADSL & SDSL

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is where you have a shared bandwidth and your upstream (upload speed) is 1/4 the upload speed

Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) is where you don't share the bandwidth and the upstream = downstream

Other connections include T1, T2, and T3, and these are mainly for companies...

As for you, apply for DSL (or broadband - same thing), but make sure you choose a good speed. This is the catch. I do not recommend going for a 256 Kbps...it's kind of slow - it's 4 times as fast as dialup,, but still slow. I have a 5 Mbps DSL and sometimes feel restricted with speed!!

Note: some sites are relatively slow, even if you have the fastest connection, so, don't always blame your internet provider..

Good Luck!

DSL is provided by the phone companies. Broad band is normally a cable TV based service and it works independent of your phone line. Broadband for Internet access is faster and the price is around $40 per month. If you have cable in your area ask your CATV service provider about it. It may not be available where you are. DSL is not much cheaper than Broad band and it is not universally available either. Get on the web and research both options in your area.

Broadband includes both DSL and Cable internet as well as T1 or higher connections.

You should be in great shape even with the slowest of DSL speeds but probably not with the Cable Lite the cable company offers.

Cable companies and Phone companies are so different locally and it depends on what cable service you have for cable net and phone service for DSL you will have to call your local companies.

DSL is a type of broadband. Broadband refers to any type of connection to the internet that is dedicated and you don't have to dial up through your standard phone line. Cable is the best, and DSL is the second best and its cheaper. I am currently paying $20 per month for 3MBps DSL, which is about 70 times faster than a dial-up modem connection.

DSL is a broadband connection. What I'm assuming you are trying to compare is DSL to a high speed cable connection. Both will depend on local availability. Since you say you are going to college, I would guess both are going to be available. Companies see areas with college campuses as a huge customer base.

Generally, the cable connection is going to be significanlty faster depending on the speed you purchase. The faster the connection the more expensive it is. DSL is going to be less expensive but quite a bit slower. If you are just going to use your internet connection for classes, DSL should be more than adequate. If you also plan to watch streaming video, download music or engage in online gaming - cable is probably the way to go.

What you will want to look at is other services you can bundle together. What phone company will you be using? What T.V. service will you have?

If you plan to have cable television; check into the cost of cable internet. If you only want cable internet and not subscribe to cable T.V., you have a problem. Most cable companies will charge you for a "blocking" fee for the T.V. service. Guess what... it's the same price for basic cable as the blocking fee. They can't actually block you from "stealing" the basic cable T.V. signal once you have the hard line coming in for your internet, so they just charge you like you are going to steal it anyway.

If you can not afford cable T.V. - cable internet is then also out of the question due to the blocking fee. If that's the case - go for the DSL. ANYTHING faster than dial-up is the way to go. Satellite tends to be expensive but I have not done a lot of research into speeds vs. cost etc...

My honest suggestion is to go with basic cable T.V. and their slowest cable internet speed. (Hey, your in college... Need some essentials but let's keep it cheap eh?) Then go with a phone company like Vonage. You will be able to hook up your internet with a faster connection than DSL, get basic cable - then Vonage will hook you up w/ phone. (Will require the use of a router that you hook your phone into) Advantage will be that your room-mates will also be able to hook up wirelessly on your connection and you can share the cost.

You should be able to then get phone, T.V. and internet for around $85 to $100 per month.

DSL is a type of broadband.. You're looking at speed, and, as for which is most affordable, you'll be comparing cable hispeed, or dsl, and that's always a local thing.
