I mean, Bob Dylan doesn't have the best voice does he? And he's a legend. But then again, he did start out in the 60's and this is 06' and very different time. Do you think someone that doesn't have the "perfect" voice but is very musicaly intelligent can make it in this day and age?

Yeah, I think it's more about the amount of passion you put into it.

Many singers today really don't have a specially trained voice but still make it in the music industry. Unfortunately a lot of them do not sing very well in live performance. Some artist only sound good in the recording studios and productions with the equipment and technology to make up for the vocal skills that they lack. However, with the professional voice coaching they can improve the quality of their voices.

Bob Dylan was a 'stylized' vocalist....more of a musical poet and storyteller. He was able to hit every note perfectly, and I would imagine that he was able to sing quite well in the traditional style if and when he wanted to. He's always been shortchanged when it comes to vocal credits, but many of us think he was one of the greatest of all time including myself.
To quote from Wikipedia:
'Dylan's singing voice was unusual and untrained and his phrasing as a vocalist was eccentric. He sang his songs in a style that hearkened back to the folk-singers of the 1920s and 30s, which was almost unheard-of in the music industry of the time.[15] Many of his most famous early songs first reached the public through versions by other performing musicians who were more immediately palatable.'
Obviously, Dylan's hugest talent was as a composer.

It happens all the time. There are many popular musicians that do not have real musical talent. Take, for example, the Rolling Stones! I know that many people like them, but I've never heard any of those guys playing (or singing) good! Actually, there are some street musicians which do music much, much better then them. It seems that it is no longer a matter of quality, but of connecting with audience...

Ever heard of William Hung? Paris Hilton? Heck, David Hasselhoff and Don Johnson cut albums and sold records.
A big part of music these days is the marketing. If you have the look, the moves, or just mere shock value, you have a shot.

most deffinately - you see it all the time. Only some times you dont recognise it because they digitally enhance their recordings or sing within a very limited range. I bet if you got all todays top groups and took their lead singers and put them in Idol, hardly any of them would make it through to top 12!!!!!!

yes. Now most singers don't even sing. Their voices are computerized and done over with the machines. Or other people can sing for you.

I think in today's society it's more about what you look like than how well you sing or act. It's sad.
