The Internet, or simply the Net, is the worldwide, publicly accessible system of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). It consists of millions of smaller business, academic, domestic, and government networks, which together carry various information and services, such as electronic mail, online chat, and the interlinked Web pages and other documents of the World Wide Web.
Contrary to some common usage, the Internet and the World Wide Web are not synonymous: the Internet is a collection of interconnected computer networks, linked by copper wires, fiber-optic cables, wireless connections etc.; the Web is a collection of interconnected documents, linked by hyperlinks and URLs, and is accessible using the Internet.

Internet: The world-wide network of computers through which we're all sharing information. Example: Yahoo! Answers is an internet website. Intranet: An organization's internal network, commonly using many of the same services as the internet such as web and email. The difference is it is only available when connected to that organization's network. Example: A networked system for placing sales orders at a retail store, which can only be accessed from computers inside the store. Extranet: The bridge between the above two -- features provided by the organization's intranet which are also available on the internet, usually via an encrypted connection for security. Example: Warehouses which have their inventory systems linked so they can all check each others' current inventory. Only those warehouses have access to the system. Hope this has helped clarify.
