It is all about being noticed. It is not even about having talent it is about being in the right place at the right time and making the right connection. The right connection however doesn't not have to be someone famous it can be someone with the ability to make you famous such as an agent, a publisher or a producer. Most of those people are not well-known but they all hold the power to making or breaking a career.

You have to have both talent and proximity to those in the show business field your interested in.
Case in point, Harrison Ford had a great background in acting, and ability but could not get a break. So, he got some books on carpentry, and got really good at it. His work was so impressive that he landed a building contract with George Lucas. Beginning of story.
So, besides working on your main area, you might consider practice and study in something still is a creative outlet that not only pays the bills but also can give you the chance of positive recognition (if you do good work).
For example, famous people still have to eat and like to do it at 4 or 5 star establishments, consider serious study in the culinary arts, don't forget to learn french!!
