If you're at risk for having a baby with a neural tube defect (spina bifida) then you should take a folic acid supplement, even though it's already in your prenatal vitamin.
I have a seizure disorder, and the meds I take put me at an increased risk of having a baby with spina bifida, cleft palate or cleft lip, so my ob/gyn recommended I take a double dose of folic acid daily. I was taking 800 mcg (200% of my daily requirement). Like a previous poster said, folic acid is one of the vitamins that is water soluble and not stored in your body (very similar to vitamin c).

Folic acid is water solluable so you can't take too much. However your multi vitamins will provide more then enough of your daily allowance, usually 200%
this is extra info-
Folic acid works, but it only works if taken before and during the first few weeks of pregnancy, when the neural tube is developing into the brain and spinal cord. When the neural tube does not close properly, a baby is born with a very serious birth defect called a neural tube defect. About 2,500 children are born each year in the United States with a neural tube defect. If all women took adequate folic acid before conception and during pregnancy, the number of babies born with a neural tube defect could drop by as much as 70 percent.

Your regular prenatal vitamins should have enough folic acid in them that you don't need a seperate other vitamin of folic acid..
Congrats!

that is something you should speak with your doctor about. I had two children and I only took prenatal vitamins but my dietary intake was sufficient enough to supply the other nutrients I needed. Before taking anything extra speak with your doctor at your next check up. Please Please you don't want to harm your baby in any way by taking ill gotten advice from know it alls on this site. Good luck and Congrats!

no - it should be in your pre-natal vitamin and "more" is not better. However, don't take milk with your pre-natal vitamin, it inhibits the intake of many of the necessary nutrients - wait at least 30 minutes.
