This is not a myth. It's is infact the truth. America is the only country who calls the worlds most beloved sports FOOTBALL(soccer). The most populous sport on planet earth It's despicable. Oh it's true. Otherwise, it is beyond the realms of sanity of people who named football, soccer, to gallivant all over the nooks and crannies of the country parading football as a soccer. THey must either be suffering from bouts of invidious amnesia stemming from chronic insomnia or are delusive comedians of moronic genre.

This is what I know:
American football was established before association football. In those days, there was a greater emphasis on kicking the ball in order to advance it toward the end zones. It has evolved into a pass first, run second, kick third strategy. An Englishman by the last name of Brown decided that association football needed to be different and coined the term "soccer" that continues to be marketed under that name by the powers that be in Europe. Basically, we didn’t need to name it soccer because we already had football. And it isn’t necessary to dispute me, look it up....

Its bloody US influenced i say. Its supposed to be Soccer! What football? There's nothing similar with the american football or rugby they play. Come on soccer is the biggest sport in the world so stop naming it after another sport. Nobody calls it football unless its the americans who cant tell the difference between a round ball and an olive shaped one!

For the record... The US and Canada are not the only countries to have to call football Soccer!!! Australia also has their own brand of Football (AFL).... That's why - to avoid people constantly asking this question and any confusion - they write football/ soccer!! It doesn't matter what its called as long as everyone knows we are talking about the beautiful game!!

Well soccer is called football by most,if not all the countries of the world except America in order to distinguish between american foobtall and the real football(soccer)!I know it as football, the name soccer actually annoys me.I've seen it sooooo much on this forum that sometimes it slips out of my mouth instead of foobtall!

Futbol is football, and it's football all over the world. Ever play fusball? Yup, that's football. Americans made a passing and running game and called it football for some reason. I mean if baseball is baseball, then why isn't American football yardball? Australians took it further and made Australian rules football. Why we call football soccer here, I don't know, but I'll bet the NFL would sue if they started calling it Futbol here. Dumb Americans. ;) Anyway, yeah, it's football. Haha. :)

In Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries, soccer is indeed called football. I think it makes sense because that sport uses your feet so it should be called football. However, growing up in america, I learned that football isn't really "foot-ball."

Soccer is called football in all countries but the United States where it is called soccer. We have a game originated in the U.S called football, so in order to avoid confusion, we call soccer soccer, not football.
Cheers.
