If it's only the movies I'd say Star Wars (despite Jar Jar and the Ewoks), but if you include the TV series it must be Star Trek. George Lucas has made clear Star Wars is for kids, and it is a rip-roaring adventure, but if you want a little more thoughtfulness instead of action - and not everyone does - Star Trek is for you.
Starting with the original series it has addressed serious real-life issues in an entertaining way, and has more to say about our world than Star Wars, which is great but basically fantasy. Star Wars does not pretend to be about us, whereas Star Trek has always been about looking forward to a better future for humanity, and right now in 2006 I think we need that message more than ever.
By the way, shouldn't this be in TV and not royalty?

If the question is "star wars" or "star TREK" I would have to say star trek. Classic show. I love the episode "trouble with tribbles".
