I think that the only way that you will know the answer to this question is to talk to your grandmother. Tell her that you would like to pay for the dinner that you had and ask her how much it was. That way you can talk to her about it and see what she says. If you are really worried about it buy her a gift card for applebees and next time you go up there (which should be soon) take her out on you. Sometimes family feels that the elders should not have to pay for things but do not know how tell them this so by ordering less expensive items it is their way of doing that. If you want a sure fire way of being able to tell what the dollar amount of an item should be when someone else is paying wait to order until last and look at what others are ordering and find something around that amount. I do not think that you should feel guilty about what you ordered especially if you ate all of it. But talk to your grandmother and tell her that you are concerned about how much it cost. There are many ways of rectifying this so dont worry. If you want more suggestions just email me. lvb524@verizon.net

While you never want to known as the one that ALWAYS has to order the most expensive thing. If she said to order anything you wanted, I do not think that you did anything wrong. When ever I am in this situation, I will sometimes ask what others are ordering, and then I will try to find something within the same price range. Now I have gotten the plate that you talk about and I know here in Texas it is like $9.99 and a hamburger is like $8.00 or so. I think that you did ok. If she didn't complain, don't worry.

Actually maybe it all depends on how you were raised. I'm a southern lady. So therefore I would say yes that you did disrespect her. When someone else is buying its always considerate to order something realistic. Such as a shrimp dinner would have been fine. Why the steak and the shrimp when you're first meeting someone in your family thats just not a suitable thing ta do as far as i'm concerned.
But again...maybe its just a southern thing.
i've ordered shrimp plenty of times when i was about ten and with my parents for dinner.

I think your Uncle needs to lighten up. At the end of the day, and I don't say this disrespectfully to your grandmother, you can't take money with you when you die, so what does it matter whether you have bucket loads, or one crumpled note in your pocket? She said you could order whatever you wanted, and I'm sure she got far more enjoyment out of watching you be happy, than she would looking into her purse, and seeing the difference between a burger and a steak sitting there lol. As people get to middle age, they get pretty concerned about money, but as they get older, they really don't care!

Don't worry about it she is your grandma and she told you that you could have anything that you wanted!! Your uncle had no right stepping in and making any comments because she was the one that left it open for you to choose and if it was what you wanted to eat you could. He is probably saying that because he thought that it was rude to order the most expensive thing on the menu. Don't let it bother you!

I have never been in this situation and I find it a bit weird but if she said clearly that you can order whatever you want I would of ordered whatever within reason..was it the most expensive item on the menu? then I would of had a problem with it.

if you have never met her in your life, it was probably a little rude. In your situation, I would have waited to see what others ordered first and stayed in that price range. Often, when people say "you can have anything you want" they dont mean for you to order the most expensive thing on the menu!!

I believe it is fine since she said "order anything you want" the more courteous way of handling it would have been to take care of the tip or chip in a few bucks... or 20.

Applebees isn't exactly fine dining, and their combos are generally pretty cheap, so I don't think it should have been a big deal. Somewhere fancier, maybe, not at Applebees.

depends....if your grandmother's living on a meagre pension....try not to order too much. The older folks will think you were trying to ripe something outta them....especially since every cent counts for them.
