If it has a hydralic clutch it may not be releasing all the way which means the gears dont open to let the shift lincage in.

1. have your clutch system checked; maybe worn out clutch pad and disk; if one of them is worn out, have both replaced
2. in a stick shift, there is a rubber stopper located inside the transmission, usually when old, this should be replaced; have it checked and replace if necessary
3. in automatic, have mechanic check the tightening for the shifting from one speed to another;

Well..if its a stick shift, it may be that you need a new clutch...if its automatic, aounds like you have transmission problems.
