There are many paths to becoming a professional actor. None of them are guaranteed.

First of all, you need to live in New York, Los Angeles or Toronto. (Many American TV shows and films are shot in Toronto these days, and they have to hire local talent for small roles.)

You will need to have an agent. Agents get actors jobs. There are a few ways to get an agent.

First, you can go to an acting conservatory. That's a college that specializes in acting. There's a famous ones at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, for example. When you finish your acting certificate or degree, there will be a showcase. Agents will come to the showcase, and if they like you, they may sign you.

Another option is to go out on your own and try to find acting work. You look for auditions listed in the newspaper and trade papers, and go to as many as you can. Take any legitimate work you can get, in theater, film or TV, even if it doesn't pay. Hopefully an agent will attend one of your performances or films and want to meet you.

Third, you can cold call agencies. The Screen Actors Guild has a website which probably lists all the talent agents, and it will tell you if they accept cold calls or not. If they do, you send in your headshot and resume with a short letter expressing your interest. Then you call and ask when you can come in to meet an agent. You have to be extremely persistent and thick-skinned. There are thousands of aspiring actors out there doing the exact same thing.

Personally, I would recommend going to college and majoring in theater. While you are at school you can go on auditions. After you graduate, you can work part time or full time and continue to go on auditions and do plays and student films. You will build up a network of theater and film friends, and you will support each other and work together.

Remember, 99% of people who want to be on TV never make it. However, there is that 1% who succeed...

you won't find your answer as easily by asking someone on here. you need to go to a talent school and work your way up from canned goods commercials to low budget tv, maybe home and away, release a single, get an agent in LA and maybe you'll be able to do commercials there and maybe, just maybe you will be cast in a movie if you go to enough auditions
