Prevention
The bacteria that cause toxic shock syndrome can be carried on unwashed hands and prompt an infection anywhere on the body. So hand washing is extremely important.
Females can reduce their risk of TSS by either avoiding tampons or alternating them with sanitary napkins. If a girl uses only tampons, it's important to choose tampons with the lowest absorbency that will handle her menstrual flow and to change the tampons frequently. Between menstrual periods, it's a good idea to store tampons away from heat and moisture (where bacteria can grow) - for example, in a bedroom rather than in a bathroom closet.
Because staphylococcus bacteria are often carried on dirty hands, it's important to wash your hands thoroughly before and after inserting a tampon. If your daughter is just starting her menstrual period, she should know about taking these precautions. Any female who has recovered from TSS should check with her doctor before using tampons again.
The best defense against STSS is to clean and bandage all skin wounds as quickly as possible. Call your doctor immediately whenever a wound becomes red, swollen, or tender, or if a fever begins. Although STSS almost never follows strep throat, it's wise to check with your doctor whenever your child has a sore throat with fever, particularly if your child's condition is worsening despite medical treatment.

Honestly, Tampons can be scary at first, but I would not worry about TSS. The tampon is more likely to fall out from using the bathroom or your rate of flow before you get TSS. You just have to remember to RELAX before inserting your first tampon. Your mom should not be too concerned about using a tampon, but just talk to her about wanting to go swimming and your concerns with gym class. Good Luck!!

Use regular absorbency tampons, as everyone else said. Until you get a little bit older, I would stick to wearing tampons only during gym, while your swimming, or whenever you need. The risk of getting TSS is pretty low, but better safe than sorry. NEVER sleep with them on. Four hours is the absolute longest I would wear them.

At first my mom was wary about it too. But if you have a heavy flow (you have to change your pads often), tampons are probably a good idea. Explain to her that you think you're ready and that you actually need them b/c pads are strong enough. Also explain to her about gym and swimming. If she still says no ask your doctor (hopefully a girl) or a close friend (either a relative or a friend who already uses them) for help on how to use them.

TSS OCCURS WHEN TOXINS CANNOT ESCAPE YOUR BODY. WEARING A TAMPON TOO LONG IS ONE WAY TO GET IT.
PADS SUCK. THEY ARE LIKE DIAPERS. PLUS YOU CAN'T SWIM IN THEM.
WEAR A TAMPON WHEN YOU SWIM, OR GET A PRUDUCT CALLED "INSTEAD". IT LOOKS LIKE A CARVICAL CAP AND IT COLLECTS THE FLUID.
YOUR MOM IS JUST WORRIED BECAUSE TAMPONS ARE SO COMFORTABLE YOU MIGHT FORGET IT'S THERE AND LEAVE IT IN TOO LONG.
I USE REGULAR TAMPONS MOSTLY, AND I CAN TELL WHEN IT'S FULL BECAUSE I START TO CRAMP UP (USUALLY IN TWO OR THREE HOURS).
JUST BUY A BOX OF REGULAR UNSCENTED TAMPONS WITH A PLASTIC APPLICATOR, AND LEAVE THEM IN YOUR GYM LOCKER, AND DON'T TELL YOUR MOM. TRY PLAYTEX OR TAMPAX WITH PLASTIC APPLICATORS.....AND DON'T FLUSH THEM. READ THE DIRECTIONS FIRST!

tampons can be hard to use at first. Other than that, I love them. Use a lower absorbancy (regulars) to avoid TSS.
