On the contrary, I am proud to be an American in spite of George W. Bush.
I am proud to be an American because of several reasons.
I am proud that American soldiers in the last century have bravely gone to foriegn soil to fight for our freedom and that of others. Despite the deplorable way that George W. Bush and his crony's have mistreated them and veterens.
I am proud of the way America has taken care of it's old and poor. That we were able to pull the old and the disabled out of poverty with Social Security and Medicare. Dispite the fact that GWB has tried to privatize and run these programs into the ground.
I am proud of the way Americans are always there in a crisis, whether it is in our backyard or another's. Despite the deplorable way this administration will only be responsive if it is politically expedient.
I am proud of our democracy. Despite the lack of transpanency, accountability and truth telling that has been the hallmark of this administration.
I am proud of the teachers who work in our public schools for less than deserving wages, striving to make sure that every student gets a decent education. Despite this administrations attempts to destroy and once again privatize it.
I am proud that with ingenuity a person in this country, no matter what color, sex or sexual orientation can make their dreams come true with hard work and integrity. Despite this administrations lack of concern for those who are striving to feed their children on a minimum wage that keeps them so far below the poverty level that they have to make a decision whether to feed their kids or turn on the heat, much less create a "savings account " for healthcare. And this administration's making bigotry and hatred a "family value".
I am proud that we have a freedom of speech. Depsite this governments control of the media and the repeal (Reagan era) of the Fairness Doctrine and their unbelievably effective propaganda machine that they have created in the last 15 years.
I am proud that we have protection from and for religious beliefs. Despite this administrations attempts to pander to the extreme religious right, who have admitted to an agenda to turn this country into a shining beacon for Jesus (aka. a Christian theocracy).
I am proud that under Clinton we had the strongest economy in the history of the world. Despite GWB's running up such a huge deficit that we are currently paying $27 BILLION a month in interest payments. So much for an "ownership society". Noted and respected economists have said over and over that we cannot, cannot sustain this.

In a nutshell, I am proud to be an American DESPITE GWB and his crony's.

Although pride isn't quite the word I'd use...happy to be an American is better. The mis-guided or just plain greedy things this administration has done are trully troubling for me...It makes me cringe to think of what other countries might be thinking about the common American.

Bu I am proud of the patriotic Americans who stand up for the RIGHT THINGS...that even includes a few Republicans like Alan Spector or Lindsey Graham. Maybe this era will teach us all a little humility and maybe true patriots will find their way into politics to counter the greed of the present...I believe bad things will always happen and idiots will get elected, but I also believe nature seeks balance.

NO! Very ashamed

He's a liar and a thief!

The bad guys are stronger now than they have ever been, our civil liberties have been eroded. 200-500 soldiers a month are being injured and maimed for bush's lie.

Our economy is in the dumps. the national deficit is higher than it has ever been.
The world hates us more than ever.
We are losing in Iraq.
Bin Laden is still on the lose
He bungled efforts to handle the Katrina disaster.
Jobs are down.
Prices are up
on and on...

how can I be proud?

No.
I'm embarrassed that America is represented by emperor bush, and his heavy-handed misuse of our international relations has left us with precious few allies who care about us.
It's just a shame how few can look at bush and not be totally offended at his trampling of our political rights, prisoner rights, and misuse of the military.
And, ghod help us, there's so many of the religious right out there talking about how they're proud bushie 'won't back down' and 'stands up for what's right'.
Stubborn, hardheaded, wrong. Great traits for a leader.
Nope, just embarrassed.

I have always been proud to be an American. I share a digust with alot of people towards Bush. We only have to endure his incompetance until his term runs out. After that I hope that we put somebody in office who has morals and a sense of humanity and clean up this mess that Bush has created. After the oil war is over, we, as Americans will pay for the cost and cleanup of this so called war on terrorism. Proud to be American? YES. Proud of my government at this time? Hell no.
P.S. Not all liberals smoke pot.

Yes.....George Bush has been through so much, no president would wish that on themselves. He not only makes me feel proud, but also makes me feel safe. Even through all of the wars, national disasters, and economy crash, he has still managed to keep a great approval rating. Some things that he does confuses me but I believe that you can't please all of the people all of the time!

P.S.
Don't let our president define our country, just like the millions of folks in the Middle East that live just like most of us. We have our extremists and they have theirs, and the media only shows what we make think is exciting or appalling. If you are getting your news from ABC , CBS, NBC, CNN, you are only getting the worst of the worst, and never seeing the Millions of people yes Millions of people in the middle east that believe Americans are unselfish and they are so happy that they have there freedom back. I can't believe people let a 30 minute news show form there opinions. I think I seen a post from someone that said 911 could have been prevented by Bush! Where in the world do you get that. Ahhh, you complain about that but then you complain about the US going after other terrorist now to PREVENT another 9/11.....get your facts straight and pick a side Gezz.. Sorry for the ranting...I will shut up now!

George Bush has nothing to do with how should feel about being an american. Remember he is just one person out of millions. Just because he is President, he does not represent each person individually. I am proud to be an american. I am not so proud to say that Bush is our President, however.
