Colourblindness is genetic, so you get it from your parents, its on the X chromosome, the reason that more guys than girls are colourblind is that the girls have 2 X chromosomes, so if one is defective (has the colourblindness gene) they can use the other chromosome that is in perfect working order. In males, we only have 1 X chromosome, so if our ones got the colourblindness gene we dont have an alternative chromosome to use, which is why we are more likely to suffer from it.

It's from DNA, specifically the X chromosome. What color-blindness is someone missing a cone photopigment type. Each eye has rods and cones. Cones let you see color. Everyone has red, green and blue cones. All colors, even white, can be made from a specific mixture of these 3 colors. The brain interprets the signals from the cones and determines the color. When someone is missing a photopigment, they are unable to see that color. So people missing the green photopigment confuse red and green but can still see in color. When someone is missing 2 photopigments, they only see black and white.

Its often genetic and its a defect in the eyes themselves. The colorblind person does not have the correct color receptors in the eye.
