on white carpet shampooing is great for brightening the carpet but remember you have to extract that shampoo out or a sticky residue will remain and the dirt will stick to this like glue, your carpet won't stay clean for long. Like shampooing your hair, you have to rinse it. So a steam cleaner is probably best but depending on the condition of the carpet and the amount of traffic you may have to shampoo first then steam clean to get the best results. so if it were me I would look for a steam cleaner to buy and shampoo my traffic area's by hand ( scrub brush and carpet shampoo or "Sunlight" detergent will work mixed with water ) then steam clean all the carpets.

The Rug Doctor carpet cleaner does a terriffic job. The rental fee is $19.95 for 24 hrs. Any attachments to clean furniture cost $3.00,and then there is the solution to buy.
White carpet? Yikes ! It would be a good idea to purchase a carpet cleaning machine. This way you come out cheaper in the long run.

I own my own carpet cleaner. It is so much cheaper in the long run than renting machines or paying someone to come in and clean them. Spend the money though and get a good one that is self-propelled and has a clean and dirty water tank. If you clean the machine after each use it will last you forever.

The cheapest way to clean your carpet is Hot water and laudry detergent. (Believe or not that is what carpet shampoo is made of anyway. I mean Clothes are cloth and carpet is cloth.) You can either use a spunge mop or go to Wal mart and get a thirty dollar shampooer, then clean your carpets that way. Trust me it is easier than it sounds.
