There are many diseases that can occur on oaks, some with very different symptoms. Some have leaf spot, canker, wilting, gall, some diseases produce mushrooms on oak, there are even plants that do not show symptoms until later when the tree is so far gone, it must be cut down.
It is very difficult to say, but the list above is a good starting point. Here's an article that may be of some help to you:
http://www.ppath.cas.psu.edu/EXTENSION/PLANT_DISEASE/oak.html
Often times, the diseases that occur on oak (or any plant for that matter) must be taken to a clinic for a complete and accurate diagnosis because you cannot just look at a tree and know the pathogen that is causing the problem. They are microscopic organisms that must be cultured and looked at under a microscope.

Hi, This is sort of a general question, If you have an old established tree then it is sick when it, looks different than last year.
But in general, when the leaves look brown or fall color too soon, when there is rapid branch die back.
If the bark is splitting off the main trunk, If it looks like it has cancer, huge misshapen growths of bark, If there are insects webbing in the branches. And if you have black spots on the leaves, I especially fear when the end of the branches of fruit treas look like someone torched them. That is a bad blight!
Maybe, you could be more specific in your question by giving a good description of your tree! Including how close it is to street or driveway. Oh yeah, Oaks, well dose it look like a squirrel has nipped off the ends of all the branches so they are hanging and brown? Well, I am waiting for the answer to that too. Try this web site.
