only by the pitching coach or manager-1 each. The second time, they're out of the game.

Well, the people above seem to have researched the rules pretty well, so there's no need for me to add to that. But just a little observation about how things have changed--when I was a boy in the 50's and 60's watching baseball, according to my memory, it was almost always the manager himself who made the trip to the mound, and we always knew that the second time was the last for that pitcher. At that time, I don't remember pitching coaches having any part in it--I don't think we had any awareness of pitching coaches even existing.

But now it seems it's always the pitching coach who comes out to the mound to do the "counselling." If the manager comes out to the mound, even the first time, that usually seems to mean a pitching change.

There is no set limit to the number of mound visits by players . Yes if there are two visits by coach or manager in the same inning there has to be a pitching change. The umpire has the job of keeping the game moving and may break up mound conferences to achieve this goal.

I think "jimmfo" is 100% correct, as are most of the responses.

I believe that the "second trip removes the pitcher rule" was put into play shortly after (perhaps the following season after) then Oakland A's Manager Dick Williams kept coming out to break up the rhythm of the opposing team's (Cincinnati Reds?) offense during the 1972 (?) World Series.

The rule was instituted to speed up play, and technically, the limit would be the number of available pitchers (times) 2.

as FK indicated, a 2nd trip by either/or the manager or a coach to the mound requires that a pitcher be removed, UNLESS one of the 2 trips is specifically for an injury situation......in this case, removal is not mandated by rule.

there is no real limit on the number of trips overall in an inning however, as the limit is per pitcher.

There is no limit as to the number of visits, but after every 2 they have to replace the pitcher
