There is the romantic version, the Disney version, and the harsh, grim version. Basically, Anastasia and the other members of the Russian royal family were executed to prevent a resurgence of loyalty to the crown, and to ensure a successful revolution.

During March of 1917 the Russian people revolt; Tsar Nicholas abdicates; a Provisional Government is formed; and eight months later the Bolsheviks, led by Vladimir Lenin, overthrow the Provisional Government and take over. The Bolsheviks later become the Communist Party and rule the Soviet Union until 1991.
Nineteen members of the Romanov family were executed in 1918, but a few survived the slaughter. In the 1920s, Anna Anderson claimed she was Anastasia Romanov and convinced many that she was the Last Duchess. Anderson died in 1960, but recent movies keep the story alive. In 1998 the remains of Tsar Nicholas II were officially placed in an honored tomb in Russia. The ceremony was attended by Russian President Boris Yeltsin. Those headlines served to fuel the interest in Anastasia one more time.
Did Anastasia really survive? Carolyn Meyer sees it this way. "I would love to believe that Anastasia escaped, but having read the grisly accounts of the execution and the disposal of the bodies, I simply don't think it was possible for anyone to have survived. But what if, against all odds and all evidence, she did manage somehow to escape? That is the romantic fantasy that is so appealing to so many people."

My grandfather was in the Royal Navy as a Midshipman at the end of WW1. He was a battleship called the HMS Marlborough. It sailed into the Black Sea and rescued the remaining members of the Romanov family. Sadly, there were no Anastacias. There were some distant cousins who were due to be the "next in line" and were thus treated as princesses.
When they reached the straights of Istanbul, these princesses decided they needed to take a bath and ordered the Captain to stop the ship (not an easy task). But back in those days, Royalty was considered "better than human" so you did what they said. The captain stopped the ship and ordered my granfather to collect 12 sailors in an 12 man row boat an row the ladies far enough away from the ship to "do their business".
Having rowed the ladies safely away from the ship, the ladies took their bath while 11 British sailors averted their eyes.
About this time, the Turks (who were on the side of the Axis) realized there was a British dreadnaught dead in the water within range of their guns. They started firing... My granfather collected the ladies on the ship and rowed them back to the Battlship as the artillary was walking in toward the ship with him (big splashes of explosions all around him and his men.
He made it back to the ship safely with the ladies and received a Russian medal of bravery (sitting in a frame on my wall).
It was the only ship my grandfather ever commanded (that 12 man row boat).
It's not Anastacia, but it's real.

February 1917, she and her family were placed under house arrest at the Alexander Palace in Tsarskoe Selo during the Russian Revolution. As the Bolsheviks approached, Alexander Kerensky of the Provisional Government had them moved to , she and her family were moved to Yekaterinburg where they are presumed to have been executed by firing squad in the early morning of July 17, 1918.

Why did her family get shot to death(including her)?
Because the other European countries with royal famlies wanted to overthrow the communists and put the monarchy back in place. Not possible if they are dead.
