Whatever people might say, the best are the.......Thinkpads, not all Levonos.
I wish I can afford one, they are always faster, more reliable, better warranty, lighter, etc.......but more expensive and not for gaming.
I agree with you, gateway's have not a good reputation, and toshiba's, if it's not the top of the line, forget it !
For me, my choice will be the better for the bucks.
I found Dell very attractive and you can get a very good deal if you pay attention to the many promotions they have (I got an amazing 40% discount once) and they are pretty good but don't last after 2 years. Consider extended warranty...
Sony are good, Acer travelmate very good too as the new Asus.
First choose how much you want to spend, then what you need it for then make your choice. Every week you have a new model, so the day you buy one you know the next week a better deal will be available. That's life !

Good luck...

I am recommending HP Pavilion products I have the zd8000 17 inch monitor with 2G RAM 3.2 Processor and many additional features such as card readers...4 USB 2.0 and 100G hard drive. THE most important feature I believe is their customer service...my previous laptop was also a pavilion 7000 series unfortunately I had a coffee spill near the computer and the fans drew the moisture into the laptop and caused it to fail. I returned it to HP with them sending me the FedEx box and it was returned to me in 4 days. I had one other situation which caused a power Spike and damaged the Lite scribe drive...at this point they replaced it with the newer zd8000 series with awesome speakers, windows media, and a dual tuner with TiVo like capabilities...excellent work and gaming computer.

Go to Apple...seriously.
http://www.macworld.com/news/2006/08/15/acsi/index.php - read this
I have a G4. Over a year old. No problems, notebook and I use it and abuse it.
They have the best customer service, you can speak to someone who speaks English. A stable operating system. Nothing out there better then Apple and they can now run windows (if you have that perverse desire)
I love my Mac.

if you stick with PCs, then IBM according to some engineers in the semiconductor business.
Dell has been using cheaper and cheaper material in their labtops.
I agree, I think Toshiba sucks.
