"V for Vendetta" was excellent and deals with a very important subject to us all, our liberty.

"Nuts" makes you think, makes you try to figure out why Barbra Streisand's character is the way she is.

Bram Stoker's Dracula ... I this movie! Funny, I was actually sad to see a monster die. If you haven't seen it, see it, and find out why a monster's death would be sad.

The Joy Luck Club makes you cry throughout the movie. I've seen it several times, and every time I see it, all of those same scenes make me cry.

Like Water for Chocolate... forbidden love!!! I know you asked about movies that make you think, but I couldn't leave this one out. It's a very sensual movie, but not just sexual. It's and voluptuous. The MOVIE, I don't mean the actress. I read the book and it's better of course, but I was not disappointed when I saw the movie afterward. I don't wanna say any more about it to ruin it. The only thing I will say is that it's in Spanish with English subtitles. Here is a page that shows the awards this movie won and was nominated for:

The Gods Must be Crazy is always good for laughs. Think National Geographic special meets the Three Stooges.

If you want a serious Western, get The Searchers, staring John Wayne.

The top 2 that spring to mind are Fight Club (which was huge so I'm sure you know all about that one, lol) and one called Cradle Will Rock from 1999. Here is a link to the IMDB page for Cradle Will Rock if you'd like to check it out.

~*If you haven't seen Fight Club, please scurry off and watch it as soon as you can before someone inadvertently ruins it for you. It contains a rather major plot twist that was tragically spoiled for me before I ever saw the film. I would give anything to be able to go back and watch the film without knowing the secret!*~

Excellent question by the way! ;)

I'm Brazilian and the best movie from Brazil is "City of God"
It's a movie about poverty and crime with a real story behind it. I would say this is exactly what happen in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. I think you will like it even being a foreign movie for you.

Robert Altman makes a lot of good ensemble cast movies that get one thinking. He's done M*A*S*H, Magnolia, Short Cuts and many more. Worth checking out! Some of his movies can be kind of depressing, so don't watch if you're already in a down mood.
