I have been in a long distance relationship before and trust me it doesn't work. You say you will get together for a weekend but then plans change because either you or him have new friends and want to go hang out together so he/ she says lets do it later.

I have and it didn't turn out well. He never called and never answered the phone and after two months he broke up with me.
It might work for you though, if your contections strong.
