remember that rule "when two vowels go walking the first one does the talking" well since there are two vowels you actually only say the "e".

Coz both "e" and "a" in read are vowels.Therefore, the syllable should be emphasized on the first vowel which is "e" but if you say the same word "read" in past tense then it should sound like "red" and that's when "a" has gone to look for the Vowel "e" as read in "read" in the present tense.

it doesnt stand for anything. there is an a in read so it doesnt say red.

becouse is used also as a past tense word...i will read today a stupid question.. i read yesterday a stupid question.

becouse if we spelt it reed we would think it was a plant. and its far to impotent of a word to spell it like that.
